Course Description: Directing for the Non-Specialist
A practical and theoretical course fro those interested in directing plays fro amateur bodies such as schools and community groups. The directing process will be explored in terms of script analysis, script scoring, audition methods, coaching techniques, the development of rehearsal schedules and the design of floor plans and blocking.

Required Text: Shapiro, Mel. The Director’s Companion. Harcourt Brace, 1998.

Topics for Research & Exploration:

Director as Story teller - imitation, playing roles, ceremonies, ritual, perspectives and forms, structures of seeing,theater language, visualizing the script, viewpoints.

Director as Presenter,Interpreter,Deconstructor - dramatic structure, conventions, alternative scripts, Readers and chamber theater, Story theater, Docudrama, Image theater.

Director as Collaborator - playwright, performer, designers, audience, ensemble, Play building process, exploring, framing, sequencing, rehearsing, performing.

Director as Stager - classic, religious, comedy, manners, shakespeare, contemporary, real, absurd, visionary and beyond

Directors at Work - Stanislavski, Brecht, Grotowski, Brook, Lepage, Boal. Systems of rehearsal, research, drama in education
